One-Shot Presets

Packs are full of melodic one-shots that aren’t multisamples: a stab here, a pluck there. Preset Maker groups them by sound so they’re playable instead of scattered.

Basics #

Preset Maker reads the way your pack is already organized. Folders named after a sound (“Rhodes”, “Synths”, “Vibes”) match your keyword categories, and the samples inside go into that category’s preset.

The pack you import The presets you get

Lo-Fi Sample Pack/ Lo-Fi Sample Pack/
├─ Jazz Guitar/ ├─ Guitars
├─ Rhodes/ ├─ Keys
├─ Synths/ ├─ Synths
└─ Vibes/ ├─ Mallets Pucks and Bells
                              └─ Loose (the leftovers)

Inside a preset the samples are spread across the keys, one per key, starting at C2. That’s the middle of the range, because most MIDI keyboards are short. MPC presets start at C0 instead, to match the pads.

A category needs 6 matching samples before it becomes a preset. Two chords with the same root, a Cmaj and a Cmin in one folder, stay separate presets.

Output options #

  • Starting Octave for One-Shot Presets sets the first key. C2 by default.
  • Start MPC One-Shot Presets at C0 starts MPC presets at C0 whatever that setting says, to match how MPC pads are laid out. On by default.
  • One-Shot & Loose notes play fully lets each sample ring out after you let go of the key, for 808s, crashes and risers. SFZ presets for now, other formats to follow.

Categories & Keywords #

A category is a preset title plus the folder keywords that fill it. Edit both in Preferences → One-Shot Presets. Two of the built-in rows:

Category titleFolder keywordsNote Filter
Stringsorchestral, ensemble, pizz, staccato, legato, string, violin, cello, viola, /harpOn
Percussionpercussion, tambourine, conga, bongo, cowbell, woodblockOff

The built-in categories with the Note Filter on: Bass, Keys, Synths, Horns, Strings, Guitars, Chords, Acoustic Note, Mallets Pucks and Bells. With it off: Vocal, Licks, SFX, Glitch, Stab and Hit, Percussion, Pads and Atmospheres.

Longer keywords are matched first, so the most specific category wins.

Keyword modifiers #

A plain keyword matches anywhere in a folder name, so organ also catches “organic”. Modifiers tighten that:

ModifierWhat it doesExample
/keywordNothing may touch the left side/arp skips “harp”
keyword/Nothing may touch the right sideorgan/ skips “organic”
/keyword/Neither side/hh/ skips “ahh”
wo*rdNothing, a space, a dash or an underscore betweendouble*bass catches “double bass”

Plain keywords behave the way they always have, so lists you’ve already edited keep working.

Note Filter & Exclusions #

  • Note Filter: the music-note toggle at the end of each category row. When it’s on, only filenames containing a note or chord are accepted, like A#maj, B2 or Cmin7, which keeps long loop files out of your presets. Turn it off to include every audio file in that category’s folders. It doesn’t apply to Maschine Expansions.
  • Exclusions: folders whose names contain one of these keywords are skipped entirely. Edit or clear the list on the same tab. Defaults: loop, bpm, demo, stems, construction, melodies, basslines, progression, preview.

Loose Presets #

A Loose preset collects the melodic samples that didn’t make it into a multisample preset or a One-Shot Preset. Say a pack has a single organ note: it can’t make an organ preset of its own, so it goes into the pack’s “Loose” preset instead of being left out.

On by default, and it needs 5 samples before one is made. Turn it off or change the threshold with Create Loose Presets in Preferences.
